Skyfall

This is not a review of Skyfall, just a memo to you out there who have yet to see it. Please see it this weekend. Don't do it for James Bond, but do it for the death of Twilight.

Should Skyfall have another better weekend than Twilight, it has the potential to out gross the film domestically. This would be a great accomplishment here in the US as it shows the downfall of the twilight franchise who cannot stand up against the likes of a 50 year old franchise. While Twilight cannot rebrand itself, James Bond has and will continue to push forward into cinema history.

This twilight fan craze is over and its time to put it on the back burner to die. Help Skyfall out gross the final Twilight film and get a great movie for your purchase.

Blue Ray or Blu-ray or Blu Ray or Blue-ray

I feel Blu-Ray is a bit too complicated to say. It's a lot more simple to say DVD than Blu-Ray since it is still relatively new and we are not yet completely over the DVD hump. Just like with VHS prior, the DVD will be outdated and so will the Blu-Ray with digital downloads and instant streaming. People still buy these because it is a physical copy that they can hold and see. It's that comfortability of knowing it will forever be there and never be deleted.

This is why, no matter what happens, I feel we will always have something physical when it comes to media. The most basic example are CD's. Even though iTunes MP3's far outsell physical CD's, people still by the physical copy because it is something you can hold. That sense of security rather than a false hope of it being forever.

My belief is that we will always have this notion of physicality that will never go away. No matter how advance technology gets with the digital age, having something physical will always be around.

Fake It Till You Make It

Most of us have no idea what we are doing in a new environment because we do not know the standards or the expectations that precede us since we were not there. This is why new people are always given the benefit of the doubt while they are still fresh at the company. But when does that line cross when you are no longer considered new but an experienced regular co-worker being held to the same standards as everybody else?

I have no idea where that line is. My guess is somewhere between working with other people and running a project on your own. Right about there is when people no longer see you as the new guy and instead see you as another worker in the office. I don't mean just another number, but being held to the same standards as everybody else.

So my advice is to do what you know for as long as you can while trying to improve yourself along the way. When I started, I did what I knew and that worked out for a month. After that month, I was able to get my bearings around the office and be able to run things myself. Everybody adjusts differently, but it's all the same wherever you go.

Welcome to Earth

The only line that was missing from the new Will Smith movie After Earth. Will Smith teams up with his son, Jaden Smith, in this semi-sequel to The Pursuit of Happiness. Mr. Smith plays a futuristic pilot who crash lands with his son on Earth years after all human life has left. This trailer looks very promising as it brings a futuristic feel to it reminiscent of Avatar with the upgraded animals trying to kill them. However, this film does have one major setback that is not seen in the trailer.

The movie is directed by M. Night Shaymallamadingdong whose last movie, The Last Airbender, was a complete failure by both fans and studio numbers. Although M. Night did not write this movie, his directing ability has slacked immensely since Signs. While this may the final shot for M. Night, this is only the beginning for Jaden Smith.

Despite what the trailer may emit to the audience, this is Jaden's movie. It is up to him to gather resources for his injured father, Will, during the entire movie. Jaden steps into the lead and will try to make a name for himself with this movie. With this and the sequel to The Karate Kid coming up, it will be interesting to see if Jaden has the ability to open up movies just like his father, or is he too inexperienced to catch our attention.

Only time will tell if this movie comes to be remembered or forgotten. Another action packed trailer should get my attention and ticket of admission, but for now, i'm reserving judgement.

The Pacific Rim Job

Why have you not seen the new Pacific Rim trailer?

Oh, you have? Well, let me clarify some details that seem to be circulating around the internet. The big one is that the pilots are not in the suits, but some underground warehouse controlling via remote. THIS IS FALSE! According to the Pacific Rim official website, blue prints provided of the Jagers clearly show each Jager has situated both pilots in the head to control the Jager. This is to mimic the human brain where the right side of the brain controls the statistics and math part where the left side of the brain controls the creativity and problem solving region. The same principle applies here where two people both control the same Jager but have different functions and communicate back and forth as one unit.

The second rumor is that it is Godzilla they are fighting. FALSE AGAIN! While they call the monsters Kaiju, which is what Godzilla was originally called in the Japanese versions, it loosely translates to Giant Monster. That is what they are fighting and it is not Godzilla. These are two different categories and just to be clear, there is supposed to be another movie called Godzilla coming out at a later date. Do not be confused of these two.

Third rumor that I see going around is that this is related to Aperture Science. FALSE, but I would rather it not be. Because the voice of GLaDOS can be heard in the trailer to mimic the A.I in the Jaegers, people are already making a connection between the videogame Portal and this movie. While it is the same actor portraying the voice, these are two different worlds. Portal world is a private enterprise about improving science with new technological advances. Jaeger world is government run facilities that build these machines specifically to combat the Kaiju.

Those are the facts. If you have any problem with those, I have two fists who would disagree with you.

The Hobbit: Review

Thanks to my friends, I was able to see The Hobbit at midnight in IMAX HFR 3D 48FPS. While in the beginning I had to adjust my eyes and brain to realize that I was watching more frames than normal, which led to everything in the beginning feel fast paced for me, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my time watching the movie.

While the story may feel like it is dragging on, Peter Jackson is trying his best to stay true to the original source material and not cut anything out. This is truly a challenge as the book itself is long with overdrawn out side plots, all of which fall necessary when it reaches the end sequence of the entire book. This is what Peter Jackson is culminating up to.

Now, what I really like about the movie is the visuals. While I did see it running at 48FPS, the amount of detail that goes into this movie is amazing. From costumes to backgrounds, everything is cautiously picked out and placed according to the book. At times, the amount of CG on screen is not too overwhelming at times, however, when the chase sequence takes place near the end of the film, you can definitely see all the CG with the long camera swoops into the action.

I thoroughly enjoyed this new 48FPS viewing and expect to see more movies coming out that excel to this level of quality when using this production technique.

Return to Middle Earth

Time to go back to Middle Earth and watch The Hobbit starting at midnight. Be sure to see it the way it was meant to be seen: in IMAX 3D HFR. That is how director Peter Jackson envisioned the film to look and that's how it should be viewed.

But in other news, while you're watching the film, be sure to check out the trailers for Man of Steel, Oblivion, and Pacific Rim. All of which are Warner Bros. pictures coming out next year and all of which will be shown prior to The Hobbit.

And don't forget that if you catch the film in IMAX, you will be treated to the first 10 minutes of the upcoming Star Trek movie as well as the new trailer.

No interest here

I think i've had enough of Johnny Depp for my tastes. After his stint as Willy Wonka, it seems that his characters are all the same with different make-up. However, this is not why I have no interest in his latest project.

More to the reason is that Depp is not the main character of the film, yet he is being promoted as such in all the posters and trailers. The story is not Depp's and therefore this is misleading to the point that it mimics "Alice in Wonderland" where he played the Madd Hatter and was barely in it because it was not his story to be told. I feel the same thing is going on here.

Finally, I have seen nobody clammer for this movie to happen. Nobody has ever said they wish they would turn the old tv show into a modern film. This project seems to be coming out of nowhere and because of that, there is nothing pushing me to go see it. The topics are not current and the feel of the film is too old for even kids to connect with.

You have failed Lone Ranger.

Waiting for Superman

The new trailer for "Man of Steel" has been unleashed online and it looks amazing. It has a "The Dark Knight" feel to it from an obvious input of Christopher Nolan as Executive Producer on the project, but the true calling is in the action sequences that are few and far between.

Director Zack Snyder won the job of directing "Man of Steel" because of his directorial ability in "300" and "Watchmen" both of which were visually stunning movies. However, the true essence of those movies lied in its action sequences where the fights were sped up for fast paced in your face style and slowed down for a dramatic tone defining effect. These visuals are whats missing from the trailer and I feel what is keeping audiences on the fence about the film.

I feel the marketing team is keeping those out of play in order to bait us into wanting more out of "Man of Steel" but at the same time it is putting people off as it lays in the aftermath of what Christopher Nolan has done and seen as a carbon copy. While it should be said that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, I feel that if the third trailer does not produce action sequences, expect the turnout for this movie to be poor.

IMAX 3D HFR 48 FPS

I'm talking tech specs today. Specifically "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" as Peter Jackson has decided to shoot The Hobbit in 48 frames per second. A normal movie is shot at 24 frames per second giving it the film look we know and have become accustomed to. So when there are twice as many frames added in each second of the film, you give a more fluid look and not a lot of blur with objects in motion.

This high frame rate allows a more realistic look many people are not ready for. When 3D is added upon that, you get people who succumb to migraines and head aches from watching the movie. These people have so used to seeing a flat 2D image that they are unable to adjust to the new imaging of the film in such a high frame rate.

I've been a fan of youtuber Peter Rallis who has been doing Movie Buzz for several years now and has finally branched off into his own website which can be viewed here.

This breaks up large articles of information into what's relevant and how it effects movies with his own review and summarization. I personally find his reviews blunt and to the point of why they are important and how it effects production of a movie. There are also clips and trailers that are posted as the they are released online which is kept up-to-date.

He is where I find my news to comment on, so if you want a head start on what I would potentially be talking about, be sure to check out his website and bookmark it.

Now enjoy the teaser trailer for the real trailer that will be premiering next week. Fans rejoice as the long overdue and posponed film finally arrives. It's on a big scale and all the key players are back. The adventure will push our hero to the brink as the world comes crumbling down.

That all sounds very vague, but that is essentially what we have when it comes to tentpole films. You can't really criticize it because it will deliver what is expected. It's not trying to be an oscar film and it's not going to suck balls. Even if it does suck balls, there will still be enough money behind it to succeed and a small base of fans who like what they did.

Now that sounds pretty vague too. My point being that no matter what the audience says they want to see, the studios will continue to make these big budget pictures with lots of effects to garner an income that we provide. And it's a lucrative business. Who can argue with that money making model?

Iconic Cars

My favorite movie car of all time is the DeLorean from Back to the Future. I want it. Period. If possible,  I would like to add the hover conversion and fly off (Actual time travel is also welcomed). Now, I do not have the time or skill to make my own, so I have made it my mission to save enough money to buy it off someone who has already made it. I haven't looked yet, but I know that there are actual conventions that DeLorean conventions that people attend and bring their time machine (youtube).

If you have a favorite movie car, don't feel like owning that may be out of reach. All you have to do is set aside x-amount of money from each paycheck and you'll have a good start. Salary dependent, if you save $100 from each paycheck, after one year, based off bi-weekly payment, you will have $2,500 saved up after one year. Now keep that going for ten years and you have $25,000. A good start for when you're young like me.

That's the 40 year goal for me. By the time I reach the age of 50, I want to own the DeLorean. I feel like this is easily accessible so long as I stick to the plan and meet my goal. Any extra cash I get can also go towards these funds. If you would like to contribute to my dream, I will gladly accept your contributions and provide you with a ride once I acquire my time machine.

Disney & Netflix sitting in a tree...

Disney and Netflix have come to the conclusion that you need more Disney in your life. This is why starting in 2016, you will be able to stream all Disney all the time through Netflix. Including movies from the vault that were "locked up" are now going to be free to stream to everybody.

But wait there's more! The films included are not just Disney Animation, but every property that Disney owns. This means Pixar, Marvel, and Miramax films are all going to be on Netflix. Now how long the movies stay active is yet to be known, but you will get these new movies coming to a TV/Computer/Tablet/Phone near you!

In the Edit Bay

I am going to try an type this withh as few mistakes as pisssible without pressing the delte key. 

I have a probelm when it comes to typing. Apperntly I cannot type vew well and that have severely effected my work. I type really fast becaseu I cannot type sa fast as i can think and thus i am off to eh the next work before i finish this one/ This is not to say that I am incomprible but that I am used to autocorrect to fix my istakes that I sumeitmes don't look at twhat im typing until its too late. 

As you cah tell I am not loking this one bit but if you are able to read therough all fo this, then you too have a smart person brani that can comprehend what i am sayig. This quick typing has effected my wrok as I alway s have typos in my titles. This is why it is good to have a second pair of eyes in teh edit bay why can look at your mistakes and correct you when you are too tired or are unable to type correctly like me. Sometimes the mistakes are simple like typing the the for the eth and othertimes it is big where i cannot spell a rowd correctly and rely on autocorrect to help me out.

I fyou hav ethis problem, I suggest typing out more than you can handle in order to accomodate your knowlege of keys and words s so this doesnt happen to you.

There's only one story to tell

For writers,

When coming up with a screenplay, just remember that change always makes for a good movie. The purpose of a film to make the main character change over the course of the film. They start in one direction and throughout the film we see the decisions that they make and the changes that effect them to mold them into a completely different person by the end of the film.

To make is more simple, start them off as the best person in the world, but they don't like (blank). Through a series of meetings and mishaps, this person begins to (blank) in order to change their ways to become a better (or worse) person than when they began. This makes everything simple, yet can be made into a very complex string of instruments.

Now go back to that script you thought was good and make sure the main character changes throughout the course of the story. They should be two completely different people from the beginning of the story to the end.

LIVE! FROM THE WARNER BROS. LOT.....

It's time for Animaniacs! And we're zany to the max. So just sit back and relax, you'll laugh till you collapse; it's ANIMANIACS!

Such a good cartoon that seem to get better with age. You can find just about every episode online in some place or another. Most likely Youtube, but for special ones (*StarWars*) you have to do some searching.

Watching them now after years of being off the air, they have a certain nostalgia about them that bring back fond memories of a childhood. However, if you watch them back now, you understand more of the jokes because you have a wider view of the world. For instance, all of the "Rita and Runt" pieces revolve around musicals while the Animaniacs parody just about every movie made (up to that time) stretching from "Citizen Kane" to "Forrest Gump." Then you have Slappy the Squirrel where violence is the centerpiece, and Pinky and the Brain as they try to take over the world.

The writers on this series were excellent at finding ways of pushing the boundary, specifically the sexual innuendos. Whenever you see Yakko break the fourth wall by turning to the audience and saying "good night everybody" means that there was just a sexual innuendo said. Not to mention all the musical numbers done for every episode, the voice actors on the series were very musical gifted. From musical lyrics parody to Yakko's World, the songs are very catchy as well as funny.

If you did not grow up on the Animaniacs, go watch some and, as the shows beginning goes, "...sit back and relax, you'll laugh till you collapse."

HOW TO WIN THE OSCAR: Screenplay

It's Oscar season and I will providing a view on the different ways one can win the Golden Statue.

Today is the screenplay.

There are two different types of wins that fall under this category: the adapted and the original. Adapted screenplay is a written work that has been turned into a movie. This where you see "based on" in the opening credits of a movie. This is much easier to be categorized in, as there is already a source material to which you can reference if you get lost in your own work. These tend to be easier to write and as such are much harder critiqued since there is something to reference where it is written poorly for an adaptation.

On the other side is the original screenplay. This can be easier or harder depending on the genre you write about. Since there is no subcategory, everything from comedy to drama is clumped into here making the competition a lot more fierce, but also stiff. It is tough to come up with an original concept and even harder to get that to the screen. The idea not only has to resonate with the executives at a studio, but also a director who has a keen eye for the story you are telling. Which is why most original screenplay writers are also the directors of their works. They wrote it, so they know how the shots are going to look on screen before anything else.

If however you become unlucky enough to have your screenplay made into a movie, don't be discouraged. There is a list that comes out every year titled "The Black List" which is not as scary as it may sound. This is a list writers want to be on. It means that executives like your script, but for one thing or another it just never made it to production. Most scripts that end up on this list are made within a year or two because they attract attention from being on the list. 

Wrecking Crew

I finally saw Wreck-it Ralph this past weekend.

Not before I had to endure the long and painfully funny Breaking Dawn pt. 2 for my sister. I'm not sure if this makes me a good guy or a traiter, but I did it for my sister so don't judge. My reaction was more laughable than just about everybody else.

Even though the movie is passable to be called a movie, I was still laughing at it. The funniest part has to be the end fight sequence. That non-blood bloody mess was by far the most laughable part. You have vampires killing each other, basically dwindling their own numbers only to end up being a dream-like sequence. In a movie where talking bull-shit occurs everywhere and nothing gets done, the one shining glimmer of action turns out to be as fake as the wolves.  On a side note, those were some ugly vampires.

Wreck-It Ralph, on the other hand, is a great film. Plenty of cultural references and a well written story. The best animated film since Toy Story 3. Don't think it's just for video game people only. This is not a movie for kids either. This movie is rated E for everybody.

Go see it. That is all.
