Tonight is October 19th. Yes, I know it's actually February 7th, however tonight is the return of Community which was supposed to air on October 19th. However, with a new show runner and the creator Dan Harmon out of the picture, the future of Community was left in limbo as NBC tried to decide when and where to return Community. Naturally, it was always on Thursday nights as the start of its Comedy Block, but with the final seasons of The Office and 30 Rock they couldn't move them from their bill at the 9 o'clock hour. But the 8 o'clock hour was up in the air as Parks and Recreation became a mainstay with a growing fan base.
This left only one 30 minute block of programming to be had between its two competing shows Whitney and Community. Instead of putting one before the other, they felt the viewership on these shows were too low to be places on Thursday night and moved them both to Friday nights instead giving the open slot to the new comer Up All Night. Naturally, this outraged Community fans as its hard core loyal fan base would not stand for this shift.
With Dan Harmon essentially kicked off the show he created, Community fans already had much to be mad about, so they did all they could to keep Community in its Thursday time slot. The outpouring of support for the show was enough for NBC to hold off on premiering Community from October 19th to tonight, February 7th. With 30 Rock all wrapped up, Community can now come in and reclaim its time slot.
Hopefully this season will return to its roots as a community college show about people trying to find themselves and move on in their ohh who am I kidding. I want to see how crazy the Dean gets and what Chang has up his sleeve for the group and will Jeff and Annie ever get together or will Troy and Abed continue their pop culture laden dialogue references to Dr. Who-oom I mean Space Time Inspector. Happy October 19th!
