By far, one of the most important awards are the winners for short films. These categories can not only break your Oscar pool votes with your friends but also give you an insight into the next big directors. This category is much overlooked as it does attract much to people'e attention when they go to the theaters. Most of the time the films chosen are those from the festival circuit winning multiple awards.
While these may not get the most views, it is also the hardest one to be nominated let alone win. To even be considered for a nomination you have to win several competitions held throughout the year and gather a multitude of praise from critics. This category can and often times leads to bigger productions for the cast and crew of the shorts. For most of the time, it allows the director to be given the chance of expanding on the short and making it into a full length movie.
The most notable example is Napoleon Dynamite which started as a short film called Peluca. If you want to go to the Oscars, this is your best chance since just about anybody can win a nomination if they have a good story and tell it well in under 40 minutes. This is your shot to rub elbows with some of Hollywood's elite and your best chance of winning an Oscar.
